The Book of Romans, Part 40

The Christian and Government

AUDIO ONLY

SUMMARY

The passage of scripture we are looking at today found in Romans 13:1-7, is one of the most hack, mashed, and thoroughly done over portions in history. It has been the cause of much consternation and debate, and the reason is obvious. This passage seems to call for an unquestioning obedience to secular government by the Christian, and this makes many of us nervous. As soon as this passage is read, a bunch of “what ifs” and “yeah buts” begin zinging through our head. What if the government is oppressive? What if the government is unjust? What if the government is evil?

Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.
