Some have compared prayer to a city’s electricity. Electricity which lights the buildings in the city, causes the trains to run, and keeps the city and people in good health. Without electricity the buildings grow dark, the trains stop and the refrigerated foodstuffs rot spreading disease.
Without prayer the Christian’s soul can grow dark and lonely, our motivation grinds to a halt, and we rot spiritually. But with prayer we can shine, being refreshed by the Holy Spirit, being filled with the right motivations of God, and spiritually grow strong and healthy.
9 “This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’
