Like the violent, unpredictable, reaction of the water and sodium metal, the reaction between the law of God and a world steeped in sin is volatile. In fact, it is deadly. Law mixed with sin leads to death. How can something from God, like the Law, cause so much trouble? Did God make a mistake by giving humanity the law? In the scripture we are reading today, the author, Paul, is describing a personal experience with the law here, but it is also a corporate experience which all participate in be they Jewish or Gentile, male or female, slave or free.
Once I was alive apart from law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died.
