As we continue through the letter of 1 John, the author (the apostle John) has been writing the church about what it means to be a community in Christ. He has been talking to them about the issue of walking in the light of Christ as a church. He has emphasized this having to do with love for one another, honesty with ourselves acknowledging our sins, and seeking forgiveness. He then transitions from the topic of sin and goes into a rather poetic prose in which he describes how everyone in the community of faith needs the same thing and need to be on the same mission, but who also receive grace and express their faith differently based on where they are at in Christ.
1 John 2:17
The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.
