Insomnia - Anxiety & Faith, Part 3

I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.”  — Psalm 4:8

During my most difficult time, I would often find it difficult to sleep. Difficult to get to sleep and difficult to stay asleep. I would go over the day’s events in my head, and the next days too.  Sometimes thinking up scenarios to situations that may or may not eventuate. The most awful nights were when I would wake with a panic attack. The unfortunate thing was that then I became too afraid to go to sleep. I began to read a little book called ‘The Goodnight Book’ by Richard Bewes before I went to sleep, and I would quote the above scripture before I went to sleep. I find myself quoting this scripture at night now as well. Research has shown that whatever you think about last at night is often what you dream about.

Know that God is still at work even when you sleep.

It is so beneficial to pray for sleep during these times. As my mother used to say, things always seem so much worse at night. Know that God is still at work even when you sleep. “Lord, grant us rest tonight, and if we must be wakeful, cheerful.” – Robert Bolt
