“The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights.” — Habakkuk 3:19
The low places in life can be the high places of spiritual experience (Jill Briscoe). God meets us in our difficulties. There is a book called 1000 gifts where Ann Voskamp starts to collect a list of things she’s thankful for and things she views as gifts from God. I tried the same thing. I didn’t quite get to 1000, in fact I think I only just got past 100 but I still read over that list to remind me of His goodness.
He used many things and people to strengthen me during that difficult time. One of those things were the help he sent via others. And as I near the end of this 10 day devotional I want to mention a few people I’m extremely thankful for that God sent to me during that time.
- Paushali L., who counselled me
- Maria M., who walked with me
- Jill C., who was always available to talk to
- Cate B., who listened to all kinds of nonsense and even stayed the night with me
- And my ever-patient husband, Andre.
I wouldn’t have had those people if I hadn’t talked to them about it. We need fellowship and I know it can be difficult at the moment with the lock-down to connect properly with people but it’s worth making the effort. I want to encourage you to share what you are going through. Don’t suffer alone thinking no-one understands. This quote from CS Lewis rings true “Mental pain is less dramatic than physical pain, but it is more common and also harder to bear. The frequent attempt to conceal mental pain increases the burden; it is easier to say, ‘My tooth is aching’ than to say, ‘My heart is broken’.” Share and allow others to carry you through.
