The Gospel of Matthew, Part 19

The Gospel of Matthew, Part 19

Oath-taking

AUDIO ONLY

SUMMARY

Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?
Do you promise, before God and these witnesses to love, honor and respect this person for richer or poorer, in good times and bad, in sickness and in health until death do you part?
Cross my heart heart hope to die, stick a needle in my eye!

These are a few of the oaths people commonly speak out loud in my culture. I would expect most, if not all, cultures have something similar. They usually have to do with trying to strengthen one’s commitment to telling the truth, but are they necessary or effective? What does Jesus have to say about taking oaths and making promises?

The verse below will serve as a spoiler – I promise on my favorite pet’s grave!

Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.
